The canebrake rattlesnake is grayish-brown or pinkish-buff with dark bands across its body, an orange or rusty-red stripe down the middle of its back and a brown or black tail that ends with a rattle. It's common in flatwoods, hammocks and, during the warm months, swampy areas. The pygmy or ground rattlesnake usually grows to no more than 24 inches and makes a sound like a buzzing insect if you get near enough. They're fat little suckers with a gray body marked by round, brown spots as well as reddish spots alternating with darker ones down the middle of the back.

Florida has an abundance of springs and clear rivers, but many of the trails don't go near them. Even if they did, the water usually isn't safe to drink.
