First, Richie has been established as dangerously crazy. He has ‘heard’ words when we know they are imaginary. He judged a terrified elderly woman to be dangerous, so killed her. The indications are all that what we saw and heard at that moment was his fantasy. But an audience can only achieve this if they meet and agree to certain other conditions. They must understand that in a film of this kind, normal rules of cinema may be suspended at any moment – the unexpected can happen, indeed should be expected to happen (an audience untrained in Tarantin-esque cinema will surely have difficulties even grasping what has happened).

3 Formalism and the Implied Audience 37 If all this means is that prior to consideration of actual audiences we have to enunciate the audience role demanded by a particular film, this would be fine. But I sense that Thompson is building a wall between the ‘spectator’ implied by a film, and all actual spectators. On that basis, the elitist assumptions which have slid in may well pass muster. Imagine an abstract viewer, lacking social and historical location, having no qualities other than a general ability to follow filmic cues, and – most curiously – seeming to be entirely individualised: such a lonely contemplative creature may be a nice figure for film theory, but if s/he can never connect with the reactions of actual people, s/he is surely a hollow, straw person.

And each one has consequences. Someone who credits him with a moment of charity might not be surprised when he begs his place on the boat because ‘she has no one but me’ – though it is a straight lie – but what about when, once on the lifeboat, he unceremoniously dumps the child on another passenger? An audience that has accrued steadily an image of Cal as a callous, arrogant man who thinks his wealth entitles him to whatever he desires will find confirmation of their filling of that blank – and of course more is involved in that than simply intra-filmic knowledge.
